Food systems encompass all aspects of food production, processing, distribution, consumption and waste management. Our world is currently evolving, as evidenced by significant climate change and rapid population growth. Changing weather patterns are posing challenges to agricultural productivity, requiring adaptation strategies, resilient crop varieties and sustainable farming practices for onward food processing. Concurrently, as our global population increases, food production must grow sustainably to meet rising demand without depleting natural resources or exacerbating environmental issues.
Science and technology, combined with policy interventions and public awareness, can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of food systems for the better. By researching, leveraging and embracing scientific advancements, addressing challenges, harnessing innovation and adopting a holistic and integrated approach to food, from farm-gate and beyond, we can address the challenges faced and seize the opportunities to build sustainable, resilient and inclusive food systems while minimizing environmental impact.
The Institute of Food Science and Technology of Ireland, in collaboration with Teagasc, are delighted to host the 51st Annual Food Science and Technology Conference in Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ashtown in Dublin on December 6th-7th 2023, where research and innovation activities addressing these challenges will be highlighted over two days, with leading international invited speakers bringing a global view to the theme.
The conference themes will include:
- Addressing climate challenges in agri-food production
- Bio-based solutions for food production and processing
- Data and digitalisation advances in food systems
